Only about an hour from us, though Google will get you lost if you're just headed for the Doeskin Ranch hiking trail. The Canyonlands are the primary nesting place for two highly endangered species of birds; the golden cheeked warbler and the black capped vireo. The trails are rough because they are meant to be as natural and area as possible for the wildlife, not catered to humans. A local photography club has set up a bird blind. We are off season so did not see the birds, but the swallowtail butterflies were busy. We just checked out the smaller trail near headquarters. We hope to go back with better provisions for one of the longer trails.
The ever present red-eared slider. Not a creek, river, or golf course water hazard that doesn't have at least one. |
Behind the interesting cactus is a replica chimney for the chimney swifts to nest in. They build a little basket-like nest attached to an inner wall. |
Nothing in it I think. Too tall to see but no sounds and no birds diver-bombing me to protect it. |
Headed own the Polinator Path. |

The swallowtails were all over the place but they do not sit still even while enjoying the flower so no photo. |
A bit of a drive from the headquarters. You'll want snacks and water before hitting these trails. |
