March 29, 2017 Texarkana to Clarksville, Bogata, Mt. Vernon

A bit of time in downtown Texarkana, TX/AR. We visited the Ace of Clubs House - a 22-sided Victorian era house said to be built with the owners big card game winnings. Unfortunately it is not being well maintained. A block over is a lovely federal post office/courthouse building where you can straddle the state line. A very nice man offered to take our photo together - he and his wife travel a lot as ministers to ministers and their families.
We decided to call this trip short and head back home through some of the oldest Red River District. The Red River was the border between Spanish territory and Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma. Clarksville is the county seat of Red River County, but is certainly not a bustling metropolis. They have beautiful old courthouse though and we talked with a couple who operate an antique store. They know all the history of the area, participate in various trapper/trader reenactments, right down to making their own animal skin outfits, and are working to get the old rails-to-trails project throughout the area. One of the treasures for genealogists is their records building has never had a fire so they have all the old archives in tact. Collin McKinney was one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
We passed through Bogata (not much to see) and through Avery (we have a great niece named Avery so thought we should take a photo of something with her name on it) then through Mt. Vernon.

This bar knows how to keep all of them happy.

Decided the "Hotel Grim" is an appropriate name.

"Records indicate his preaching to Wright and Friends in 1815 constituted the first protestant sermons ever given in Texas, then part of Catholic 'New Spain'. He thus established a beachhead for religious freedom in Texas at this point of entry."

5 Signers from Red River County, "more than any other old Spanish-Mexican districts" Richard Ellis, Robert Hamilton, Albert Hamilton Latimer, Samuel Price Carson, and Collin McKinney. (I added the Oxford comma :-)
