January 3-5 Bastrop State Park/Lockhart State Park Golf Course

Tuesday arrived at Bastrop SP to and checked into Cabin 11 aka David Crockett cabin. A large room with queen bed, small table, and large fireplace. Pass through kitchen and small bedroom with twin bed and a small bathroom. Back  porch had picnic table and fire ring with grill. Beautiful weather that day. Turned cold and windy at night and Wednesday stayed below 50 so hiking meant bundling up. All of the cabins and many of the group structures are CCC projects. The destruction to the area from the fires of 2011 followed by the torrential rains that broke the dam a couple of years later will not be completely restored for many years to come. Grilled steak for dinner then inside for a fire. Unfortunately the fireplace is so old and probably not been cleaned out in a coon's age so a roaring fire set off the smoke alarm. After we got the smoke cleared out we let the fire die down to a reasonable level. Thursday woke to beautiful weather. Stopped in Lockhart for bar-b-cue lunch then went to that SP to play 9 holes. It was a fun course with some challenging holes. It's the only state park in TX maintaining a golf course now.

About the fires

Saving and endangered species

Our cabin was in Pioneer Village. You probably cannot read the bottom but it explains that Cabin 12 is where City Officials and other politicians, including LBJ, played poker and cut deals. Cabin 14 was once the latrine for all the other cabins and therefore the only one originally constructed with plumbing.

This moth came in the first night. Stuck around for both days and died.

The fire and flood destruction is heartbreaking.
