Took part of Old San Antonio Road (OSR) from I-45 to Texas 6. Then on to Bryan/College Station. Most all businesses closed today.

Sunspot, NM

Recently we took the scenic highway to Sunspot, NM. The white in the distance is White Sands - made from the gypsum that washes down from the mountain and then blown to pieces by the wind. Note the Caution - you are at an altitude of 9.200 feet Please Walk Slowly. The solar observatory has been in existence since 1947. There are instructions on how to use this but it was too scientific for me. This telescope was originally used at the South Pole research station. During the "summertime" the sun is visible around the clock making it a great place to study long-period oscillations. The John Evans Solar Facility, aka Big Dome, first came into operation in 1953 to study the sun's surface. The dome rotates automatically to follow the sun. It ceased operations in 2015. Thanksgiving Travel 2023

Tracy's employer surprised everybody just a week before Thanksgiving with the announcement they would be closed the whole holiday weekend. We immediately began planning a road trip. Ultimately we stayed in Albuquerque and traveled north by rail for a few hours in Santa Fe, then south by car to Belen. We woke up to a beautiful snow scene on Saturday. The Rail Runner is a metro service that travels between Belen and Santa Fe. Comfortable way to see the pueblos and countryside in between Nuckles Brewery in Santa Fe has an interesting art installation. Yep, still part of Nuckles The Dragon train owned by George RR Martin. We're not sure if it goes anywhere. Martin also owns a bookstore and small theater in Santa Fe. It's a welcoming place and a number of their newer books are author signed. If you look closely you can see our truck back there Not really sure why the Onate theater has a sketch of Stevie Ray Vaughn but Sam couldn't resist a little air guitar time...

Fort Clark Springs

Fort Clark was a frontier fort in Brackettville, a city of only about 2,000 folks. It was established in 1852 on the Las Moras Springs. Like the other forts in Texas, it was abandoned by the federal troops when the Civil War began and turned over to the Confederacy, then re-occupied by federal troups after that war. It was famous for housing the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts. There were also divisions of mounted cavalry and for a brief period the camel corps. After WWI it was decommissioned. Post-WWII it was purchased by a private company and the officers quarters became private homes. Somewhere along the way, the enlisted quarters' buildings were converted to hotel rooms. There is an 18 hole golf course, but the biggest attraction is the third largest spring-fed pool in the state. You can read more about the history of Fort Clark by clicking here.
