Tularosa, Valley of Fires in Carrizozo

The Village of Tularosa has a long history. Sitting at the foot of the Sacramento Mountains it was once occupied by the Mescalero Apaches. In 1860 Spanish tried to settle it and build a mission. The Apache raids defeated them. Years later in 1868 the third attempt was successful after the Battle of Round Mountain. The believers credit divine intervention as those who did not go into battle met to pray the La Promesa Solemne. (see photo below)

Divine intervention at the Battle of Round Mtn

The trees beautiful in this area.

Because you want tourists to take a picture
at your house.

The Valley of Fires is a lava field. Roughly 5000 years ago Little Black Peak erupted and sent hot lava flowing 44 miles into the Tularosa basin. We took a 1 mile trail loop out into the lava field.

View from Hilltop Vista

There are pockets and small caves all over the
field.
