Hot Wells of Bexar County

After spending the weekend in The Valley we came to San Antonio for a night and to attend a our Lampasas Badgers quarter-finals playoff game at the Alamodome. Before going to the game we visit the Hot Wells historic site. In the days of railroad travel presidents and stars visited these hot spring fed pools for bathing. The remains of the classy structure are now a city park connected by the wonderful hiking trail that winds through many areas of San Antonio.
The bathhouse opened in 1893 and burned just a year later. In 1901 it was reopened as the Hot Wells Hotel and Bathhouse. In 1923 the hotel building is converted into a school. In 1925 the hotel building is replaced by tourist cabins. In 1937 a nightclub opens called The Flame Room. That lasted until 1977. In 1988 a major fire destroys the bathhouse. 2014 the Sulphur well is permanently capped.

Note the steel support beams on the left end of the building.
These were added when the site was being converted to its
present-day status as a park.
