July 12-17, Alpine and Marfa

Alpine, TX is the home of Sul Ross University. We arrived about 10:00am on Sunday and had planned to visit FUMC at 11:00am but got caught up in several art galleries. Marfa is known for its "Mystery Lights" in the Chihuahuan Desert, but we just stopped in the daytime. There is a lot of speculation about what causes the lights but so far nothing has been proven. I have been told by some that they sat for two hours watching and never saw one flame. Maybe you have to be smoking something. Regretfully no time to visit the Museum of the Big Bend on the university campus. Maybe next trip.

As with many Texas towns, this one has murals.

This advises you that Alpine was first named
Osborne when the railroad came in 1882. There was
a strong water source called Burgess Springs, now known as Kokernot Springs. Renamed Murphyville
in 1883. When the county was partitioned in 1887
Murphyville ended up in another county. Citizens
in this area voted to name the town Alpine.

There are a lot of stories but
no one knows this person.

Yep, Alpine gets to claim Dan
for a few years too.

One of the Marfa Lights viewing stations.

This tells us a cowboy reported seeing the lights in 1883.
Apaches believed they were stars dropped from the sky.

Even the desert is God's coloring book.

But the rail cars are graffiti artist's coloring book.

Lunch at Buns & Roses. Not too pretty, but good food.
