Inks Dam National Fish Hatchery

During the Federal Government shut down we visited this interesting site. Their Friends group has done a good job with installing an attractive bird blind, and providing interpretive signs for the trail.

The little Gambusia only grows to about an inch long.

This is a warm water fish hatchery built down stream from Inks Dam to take advantage of the water from Inks Lake and Lake LBJ. The earthen ponds are regularly drained and planted with grasses that will decay and provide food for zooplankton. The fish then feed off the zooplankton, who are then eaten by the larger fish.
Inks Dam produces about 1 million fish annually which are distributed to Indian Reservations in Arizona and New Mexico as well as to lakes in Texas, state waters in New Mexico, and to Fort Hood in Killeen.

We did find one employee making sure the fish were fed. I asked about the ducks being a problem eating the fish. He said not really, though they have had some egrets they have to chase away. Mostly, there seems to be enough to go around.
