Fort Parker State Park

Construction began on Fort Parker SP in 1935 under and African American unit of the Civilian Conservation Corp on the site of the old town of Springfield. The camp reconstructed the former Spanish fort, built a dam across the Navasota River as well as buildings, roads, and other facilities.

Old Springfield Cemetery. Established in 1838, the 12 families
were driven out later than year by hostile Indians. Taken up
again in 1846 Springfield later became the county seat of
Limestone Co. The oldest readable stone is for an infant
who died in 1849. The town dried up as so many did when the
railroad bypassed it in 1870 and a devastating fire in 1873.
