May 11, 2017 Houston to Austin via San Felipe de Austin

San Felipe de Austin was the first organized anglo settlement in Mexican Texas. Stephen Fuller Austin's father had made the land agreement and then died before he could bring the settlers. Stephen took up the challenge and they began immediate plans to separate from Mexico. It didn't go over too well with Mexico and they ultimately had to evacuate burning the town behind them, called the Texas Scrape.
Then there was a stop at the Stephen F Austin State Park, hitting some balls on the range at SFA Golf Course (adjacent to the SP but no longer affiliated) and up some state highways, with a stop for kolaches (yum) in Ellinger.
My camera battery died in the middle of the visit at San Felipe so I had to switch to my phone. Those photos will be of poorer quality.

The town's original well.
One of the display signs showed this desk. Sam
has an identical one he inherited. Guess that means
his is quite old.

The settlement's flag making it clear
they were making plans to declare
independence from Mexico.
This old general store is currently being used as the Visitor Center
but a nice new one is being built across the highway. The bathroom
was an adventure.

I'm pretty sure I would not have made a
good frontier woman.
