I learned a lot about this event in our history. I always thought it was kamikaze pilots but there was no mention of them. The Japanese used bombers in a very strategic plan. I thought we were attacked because Japan was allied with Germany and we were "the other side." Actually Japan had invaded China and wanted to build a Pacific Asian Empire. The US had enacted an oil embargo demanding they leave China. They needed the oil and could not possibly back down and save their dignity. They planned to move forward to other Pacific Island nations and wanted to cripple the US Navy to prevent them defending those islands.
If you make a future trip to Oahu be sure to visit the museums at this memorial that are free. You do not need to buy the ticket to go out to the Arizona or Bowfin to get the full effect.

The Japanese used publicly available maps and charts to plan their attack. This chart was used by one of the midget submarines. Up close you can see the Japanese language markings. |
He was Vice-Consul of the Japanese consulate in Hawaii. He gathered information about ship schedules by giving rides to service men hitchiking on the island. Literally "loose lips sink ships." |

Note the drop zone to aim the torpedo for direct hit. |
A pharmacist mate wore this on the fateful day. He was working in the dispensary on Ford Island when a bomb exploded in the building's courtyard. |
Lei makers began making camouflage nets. |
Children scavenged for spare machinery parts. Look at this and tell me you have reason to complain about a cloth mask! |
